Two generations. One standard.

The story of JRS Painting & Decorating begins before John was born — in his father's painting business, and in what his father believed about work.

The First Generation

It started with a man who didn't take vacations.

John's father ran his painting business the way he lived: no shortcuts, few sick days, and neighbors helped whether or not it paid. He did everything — painting, wallcovering, and decorative finishes nobody else in America was doing at the time: patterned rollers he bought from a German immigrant, with a glitter gun adding sparkle to the design. Years later, those printed rollers finally reached the big retail stores. But he was first.

He was also the pastor, and later the bishop, of the family's church. What he taught went beyond the trade: integrity isn't a business strategy — it's who you are when the job is done and the ladder is back on the truck. It's not about the money. It's the relationship that matters in the end.

The Second Generation

Too young to remember his first brush.

John started painting so young he doesn't remember beginning — early enough that he's completely ambidextrous, cutting a clean line left-handed almost as skillfully as right. He painted homes and businesses for years while waiting to come of age, then took the contractor's exam the moment the law allowed: licensed at eighteen. College put the license on pause; the trade called him back, and he's held his current contractor's license since 1983.

The compliment he remembers most didn't come from a client.

"You know, you're pretty good at this. I think I'd like to have you paint my home." — his father, a professional's professional
The Work Today

Still on the job. We never stop learning.

John remains a contractor who works on the job, alongside a crew of three — four sets of hands, one standard. What drives him now is research and development. What works and what doesn't. Which materials last and which fail. How we make the process better, safer, and more efficient. What the last job taught, and how the next one becomes the best one yet. Four decades in, licensed since 1983, the question hasn't changed: how do we make it better?
